You Want to Write a Novel. So Where Do You Start?
You have an idea. Or half an idea. Or three ideas squabbling for your attention. Maybe you’ve opened a doc, typed a few chapters, and stalled, unsure if you’re heading in the right direction or what should happen next, and (more importantly) why. Maybe you’ve never opened a doc at all, because starting a novel without a map feels like setting off across a squally ocean in the pitch-black dark.
Most novels don’t fail in the writing. They fail from having flimsy foundations. Writers begin without knowing what their story actually is, who it’s for, or how books really get sold, and somewhere around chapter three — or twenty-three — the whole thing collapses.
My Novel Beginning is four live evenings with me that fix the start. You’ll learn how publishing actually works, find the book only you can write, build a strong story underneath it, and leave with a robust story overview I’ve edited live — plus the exact roadmap for writing your full outline.
You won’t draft chapters in this course.This is the foundation work that makes those chapters possible — the work most writers skip, and the reason most novels stall.
Four Weeks. Taught Live. By Me.
There are plenty of ways to start a novel-writing education. Self-paced video courses you work through alone. Workshop classes at big writing schools, where you’re assigned an instructor from a rotating roster and most of your feedback comes from peer critique.
My Novel Beginning is different. Every session is taught live by me — the same eight-time published novelist, all four weeks, in a group capped at 10, so I know your name, your idea, and what’s in your way. The teaching runs on two tracks most beginner classes barely touch: how the publishing industry actually works, from someone selling books in it right now, and the foundation of your specific story. And instead of peer notes from your fellow beginners, the course builds to the most useful thing I can give a new writer: your premise, developed and edited by me, live, in front of you.

The real talk about publishing most writers never get. What an agent actually does. What an editor is actually looking for. How to submit like a pro, and what you’re expected to have in hand to sell a novel. What advances look like today and how they’re paid. What a comp is and why it matters more than you think. And the map every writer needs: the spectrum from commercial to literary fiction, and what publishers expect at every point on it. Bring your questions — there’s time built in.

Find the book only you can write. This session is built around a craft masterclass on the anatomy of a story: the difference between an idea and a story, the engine of plot, want vs. need, and the character diamond that makes protagonists feel real. Then we put it to work in a guided in-class exercise — whether you arrive with a fully formed idea or a blank page, you’ll leave with a direction. Homework: your logline, the one-to-two-line version of your book.

Loglines get read aloud and developed live in the room — you’ll watch every idea in the cohort get sharper, including yours. Then the session tackles the thing writers struggle with most: what actually happens in your book. Most people arrive with a character, a world, a tone. The gap is event. We close it with a masterclass on the outline: what it is, what it isn’t, how much detail, and the five questions every useful outline answers. Homework: your one-page story overview.

Every writer reads their one-pager aloud, and I edit it on the fly — the same developmental instincts I bring to full manuscripts, applied to your story in real time. You’ll hear your premise sharpen, your stakes clarify, and your next step get concrete. You’ll also watch nine other stories get the same treatment, which is a masterclass in itself.

About Me
I'm Georgia Clark — a New York-based internationally published author of eight novels, and developmental editor who helps writers finish their manuscripts and navigate the publishing industry. My books include Play It Again, Most Wonderful(a Book of the Month pick), Island Time, It Had to Be You, and others. My work has been published by Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster, optioned for film and TV (where I've also produced treatments and scripts), and translated into multiple languages.
I’ve worked as a freelance editor with 831 Stories and served as story consultant on over a dozen of their titles.
Beyond my own writing, I'm the founder of Generation Women, an internationally popular storytelling series. I’ve helped over 600 women and non-binary writers shape their stories for stage. I’m also the creator of the Generation Women Writers’ Retreat.
Over the last decade, I've helped writers from all backgrounds develop stories, complete manuscripts, navigate revision, and better understand the industry.

The outline you’ll be ready to write is the first deliverable of The Draft — the 12-month program that takes writers from outline to completed manuscript, with monthly 1:1 coaching, live workshops, and pitch sessions with a literary agent and an acquiring editor.
